You can either press those claims, arrange for your brothers to suffer fatal "accidents," or use your automatic alliance with your brothers (and your cousins in Aragon and Navarre) and whoever you marry to try and kick off the Reconquista. I recommend 1066 as an optimal starting date, but if you go for an Old Gods start then Ango-Saxon Dukes can be fun. They have a decent grip on their duchies, they have a lot of land, and they are in areas where there is good opportunity to expand. Off the top of my head, I think the Dukes of Barcelona, Bohemia, and Aquileia in 1066 are worth looking at. The game simply has a steep learning curve because it has so many moving parts, and you'll still be noticing new things or finally understanding old mechanics after hundreds of hours of gametime.
The advice I would give a brand new player is to pick a Duke in an area you like, and don't get too attached to him, because you will be restarting the game fairly soon - you'll be doing a lot of "on the job" learning and will realize a bit too late that you've done some things you regret, or think you could do better after you get a better grip on the game.
